Half term is just around the corner, and for many parents, the excitement of having more family time is quickly followed by the question: “How do I keep the kids entertained for a whole week?” Luckily, there’s no shortage of fantastic events happening across Berkshire and nearby areas from 25th May to 1st June 2024 — and many of them are free or budget-friendly!

Let’s start with something uniquely British — the Changing of the Guard in Windsor. This grand tradition takes place at 11am on the 25th, 28th, and 30th May. It’s a brilliant opportunity to introduce children to a bit of royal pageantry without spending a penny. The sight of the guards in full regalia is captivating for kids and adults alike. It’s worth arriving early to get a good view near Windsor Castle.

For children who like to get hands-on, craft sessions are running at several local libraries. On 30th May, head to Old Windsor Library from 2.30 to 3.30pm, Ascot Library at 11am, or Cookham Library from 10.30 to 11.30am. All these sessions are free, making them perfect for a relaxed, creative morning or afternoon.

If your little one is a budding circus performer, don’t miss the Juggling Workshop at Windsor Library on 28th May from 4-5pm. Designed for children aged 7 to 12, it’s a fun and interactive hour that will leave them with a new skill — or at least a few giggles trying!

Looking to explore nature and the outdoors? The Bugs, Birds and Blooms event at The Square in Camberley runs from 28th to 31st May. It’s a celebration of the natural world with free, family-friendly activities designed to get kids curious about the environment. Expect crafts, mini-beast hunts, and more.

For a full day of varied activities, Shaw House is hosting a Family Activity Day on 29th May from 10am to 3pm. Entry is just £2.50 per person, and the day promises a mix of crafts, games, and exploration in a historic setting. It’s ideal for families with children of different ages who want to enjoy a day out together.

If you don’t mind a bit of mess, then Messy Museum Day at West Berkshire Museum on 31st May (10am – 3pm) is a must. For just £2.50 per person, kids can get creative with arts and crafts while also learning about history in a hands-on way. Just don’t forget the wet wipes!

And finally, wrap up the half term with a bang at the Wokingham Party in the Park at Elms Field on 1st June from 3-9pm. This lively event includes music, entertainment, and activities for the whole family — a great way to end the week on a high note.
