Diwali is a wonderful time of the year; from enjoying a feast with your family and friends, to creating decorations for your home and enjoying the fireworks light up in the nights sky. We have listed 5 fun activities for the whole family to enjoy, including arts, crafts, quizzes and stories! Take a look at our suggestions to light up your child’s Diwali!
Jewellery Making
Get creative this Diwali and teach your child how to make a beautiful bracelet or necklace using paper and beads. This is a wonderful activity that will support your child’s fine motor skills and develop their creativity! They will be able to wear their jewellery throughout Diwali and even design gifts for family and friends to wear throughout the festivities.
Design your Own Quiz
Brighten up your child’s mind with a quiz about Diwali. A quiz is an engaging way to keep Diwali educational and fun at the same time. For young children, it is an exciting way for them to develop their curiosity and learn fun facts about the festival. Perhaps include a prize at the end of the quiz for the winner to stimulate your child’s excitement.
Lantern Making
Lantern making has always been a favourite on Diwali! It is a wonderful activity for young children to learn about colours, shapes and designs. When using items such as scissors and glue, children will also develop their fine motor skills. There are so many wonderful designs to choose from that will light up your house this Diwali. Take a look at the ‘Craftastic’ YouTube channel for some inspiration and a step by step tutorial on how to create your own lantern: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xa0afpnKcw0
Storytelling
One of the most wonderful ways to spend an Autumn afternoon is to enjoy a cosy story with your little one! Develop their interest of Diwali by telling them a story about the significance of the festival. Take turns to read the story and answer questions to encourage them to find out more about the festival. Our top picks are ‘The Night Before Diwali: A Children’s Book Introducing Diwali’ by Chhaya Kubal and ‘The Best Diwali Ever’ by Sonali Shah. You can role play the story together by dressing up afterwards, or even pair the story with a game to keep your child on their toes!
Creating your Own Rangoli
It wouldn’t be Diwali without creating your own rangoli! Try sketching a rangoli on the floor with your child and filling it with beautiful, bright colours. This is a wonderful opportunity for your child to explore their creativity by using the floor as their canvas! This activity will challenge your child to create their own patterns using lines of symmetry and to keep the colours within the lines. Remember, practise makes perfect, so encourage your child to sketch their design first, or colour in a rangoli for inspiration. Take a look at our free printable colouring book for your child to use below. You might even want to trace the designs onto a greetings card and use glitter for an extra touch!
Whatever activities you enjoy this Diwali, have the most wonderful time with your family and friends!
